Improving small-scale dairy farms’ milk production

through sufficient quality and quantity of self-produced roughage

Samenvatting

Small scale farmers in Kenya face low milk yields from dairy cows. One of the causes is the low quality and quantity of roughage on small-scale farms. Overall in all Kenyan farming systems the dairy production is influenced by seasonal fluctuation of roughage production. Next to this it is known that poor feeding, poor management and lack of knowledge leads to wastage of roughage. Research into the question of how small-scale dairy farmers can improve the quality and quantity of production, preservation and use of self-produced roughage in order to maintain higher milk production.
