Samenvatting

Depression is common problem world wide, where several people are undiagnosed and do not get treatment for their condition. Using exercise as an intervention in treating the symptoms of depression has been known since the early 19 centuries. A physiotherapist should be able to give good training advice using exercise as an intervention in reducing the symptoms of depression. Purpose of study: To investigate the evidence in using aerobic exercise in reducing the symptoms of depression in adults. Method: A systematic literature search was performed using several databases. On the basis of a methodological framework a critical review was performed. Conclusion: Aerobic exercises might be beneficial in reducing the symptoms of depression either as an adjunctive treatment or in stead of medication. More evidence is how ever needed for a final conclusion since many of the studies has some methodological weaknesses.
