Samenvatting

Problem description/research question What is the incidence of and risk factors in adductor injuries in professional rugby union (RU) players? Summary Design: Retrospective audit of professional RU teams in England, New Zealand and Scotland in the 2006/07 season and literature review including RU, Rugby league and Soccer. Participants in the audit: Physiotherapists in 13 professional RU teams with 604 players. Results: The incidence of adductor injuries in professional RU was 0.07 injuries/player. 58% resulted in more than 3 weeks lost time. 58% of injuries required surgical intervention. 63% of injuries occurred in the first half of the season. The majority of injuries were to backs (63%). The outside half/number 10 was the position with the highest incidence, followed by centers and flankers. A history of injury is a significant risk factor with the players with an injury having a far higher incidence of previous adductor injury (0.33/player) compared to the total population (0.11/player). Conclusion(s) The incidence of adductor injuries in the audit was 0.07 injuries / player, similar to the previous studies. Injuries tend to be severe and surgical intervention is common. Injuries tend to occur in the first half of the season, backs are affected more than forwards, especially the outside half/number 10 and previous adductor injury is an important risk factor. Recommendations/suggestion for further research/projects Having quantified the incidence and identified the risk factors, it is suggested that further study is required to design interventions to address the risk factors and test their effectiveness for the prevention of adductor injuries.
