Samenvatting

Neurological clinical pictures play an essential role in health care professions due to the high prevalence and the resulting long life disabilities. In order to treat the lost motor functions in neurologically impaired individuals electrical currents are applied to excitable tissue to supplement or replace function. There is still no consensus on whether Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is an adjuvant effective treatment tool to improve motor recovery. Up to now seeks the module book II.3 and II.4 of evidence based articles concerning FES with peripheral- and central nervous system lesions. The literature which is available for Hogeschool van Amsterdam students is outdated and limited. That is why literature and current data concerning the effectiveness of FES in stroke and spinal cord injured patients was critically reviewed and investigated. The research of scientific literature in electronical databases Pub-med, Cinahl, MEDLINE, PEDro, sciencedirect and a search of springer link, provided 28 relevant articles. All articles were reviewed and graded by two assessors on the basis of a criteria list. Every article which scored higher than 6.5 according to ESP protocol (exams percent recruitment 55%), were considered as sufficient and included to the scientific review.11 articles were included to the scientific review. Out of those articles accrued a pocket teacher for HvA students who are following the international program of Physiotherapy. The scientific review outlined that FES application is a useful tool besides other interventions in early rehabilitation phases especially after stroke.
