Samenvatting

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the effect of Acupuncture and Exercise on pain and functionality in osteoarthritis patients. It is estimated that ‘in 1994 in the Netherlands 181,800 persons suffered from OA of the hip and 295,600 from that of the knee. This means that about 1,2% suffered from hip OA and 1,9% from knee OA of the Dutch population. In addition, OA is more frequent in woman than in men. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Yin - passive energy and Yang - active energy, play an important role. A pathology may result when the balance of Yin and Yang get disturbed. If these two are not in balance the body is not in a good state of health. In TCM Osteoarthritis is a type of a Bi-syndrome which is connected to the weakening of the protective energy of the body. Since the Qi is weakened external devils such as ‘Wind’, ‘Cold’, and ‘Damp’ can attack the human body. In China the prevalence for knee OA ranges from 10.9% - 13.6%. Furthermore, as well as in the Netherlands, more women than men are affected. Conservative treatments include Exercise and Acupuncture. Both of them, Acupuncture have proven to decrease pain and functionality in osteoarthritic knees. This topic is of big importance since OA is an incurable condition for which there are only a few effective treatments. In addition, it can threaten your mobility and active lifestyle. Since OA is agerelated and the population is getting older and also the amount of obese persons is growing probably there will be even more patients suffering from OA in the near future.
