Samenvatting

In this Professional Assignment Project, the students Tammy Levi and Michal Leibovitz are at the service of their client Mr. Dror Ben Shaul upon his request to review scientific literature and present the results which supports the benefits of Therapeutic Horseback Riding for Cerebral Palsy (CP) children, looking at various aspects of disease related dysfunctions. Due to the multiplicity of problems presented by CP children, a multidisciplinary team is required and physiotherapy is an essential part within this team. Health professionals who treat CP children should correlate with other therapeutic approaches that their patients might be receiving. Therapeutic Horseback Riding aims at similar goals physiotherapy treatment aims at concerning body functions. It is hypothesized that the stretching, facilitation, mobilization, spatial orientation and tactile reactions that are required of the child during therapeutic riding will improve posture, balance, mobility or function in daily living. The excitement of working with a horse creates the enthusiasm and motivation needed for the child to be an active participant in therapy, which improves the outcome of therapy. The purpose of this project was to increase the level of awareness and understanding among physiotherapists and other health professionals concerning the process in practice and the beneficial effects of Therapeutic riding for CP children; a document as such would be of a meaningful service enhancing more cooperation between the different therapeutic approaches. The topics that were addressed in details are: improved postural control, balance and postural reactions, improved coordination, regulation of muscle tone, improved muscle symmetry, improved weight bearing and weight shifting capabilities, improved walking abilities, increased sensory input (as well as vestibular and proprioception) and in short also regarding psychological benefits. An extensive written paper which contains information about Cerebral Palsy, detailed description of Therapeutic riding, explanations and a literature survey of its benefits was conducted as a first step and submitted to the coach Mr. Bert Loozen. The end product is an information brochure for health professionals, care gives and families of CP children which provides information about Therapeutic riding and present its benefits. The students contact details are published at the back page of the brochure so the extensive paper could be supplied on request
