Samenvatting

Is strength training safe and/ or beneficial for children? If so, develop a strength training program for obese children, who train with the ‘Fitkids’ program? ‘Fitkids’ is a program implemented in several clinics in the Netherlands, which aims helping obese children. Within this program, PTs offer these children two training sessions/ week. According to the ‘Fitkids’ guidelines, strength training and tests should be included in these sessions; however, not every clinic follow these recommendations, due to old misconceptions. Our client, a PT who works with ‘Fitkids’, asked to look into recent literature find out if strength training should or not be used. If the answer is positive, she asked us to develop a guide with a strength training program to include in the sessions and a quick background on recent literature about childhood obesity and strength training. After doing our research, we concluded that strength training is not only safe but, whenin combination with aerobic training, it is also effective and beneficial. Therefore, wecreated a guide with all those explanations and a strength training program. We would like to suggest further investigation about specific strength exercises forobese children.
