Samenvatting

What is an evidence-based intervention to reduce shoulder injuries in the swimmers of SV Limmat Sharks of Zurich? Shoulder injury can drastically limit the capacity a swimmer's performance during training or even make the participation of training sessions and competition impossible. Often, time consuming rehabilitation programs follow injury and it takes a long period of time until the swimmers can reach their pre injury performance capacities. To reduce the incidence of shoulder injury, a thoroughly researched protocol for prevention on the basis of current scientific evidence needs to be developed. Mr. Reinicke, head coach of the swim club SV Limmat Sharks of Zürich has swimmers in his team suffering from shoulder injury. To reduce the incidence of shoulder pain a trainings program was developed with three versions of instructions addressing the swimmers, the coach and the physiotherapist. A systematic review with the research question "What is the cause of subacromial impingement in competitive swimmers aged 15-30?" served as a foundation for the program. A presentation on epidemiology of the swimmer's shoulder, anticipated causes and repetitive demands on the shoulder complex during swimming, was given to inform the swimmers of the Limmat Sharks about injury and prevention. Intervention mapping was chosen as the overall structure of the project, due to the fact that it offered a structured and systematic method towards producing a health promotion intervention.
