Background More than 15% of the Dutch elderly is obese. Obesity is a risk factor for different diseases and weight loss may improve health and physical functioning. Weight loss does not only lead to loss in fat mass (FM) but it also results in loss of fat free mass (FFM) (a.o. muscle mass). Decrease of muscle mass in elderly can be described as sarcopenia. To measure what type of tissue is lost during weight loss, it is important to measure body composition. Measuring body composition in elderly can be done by using amongst others Bod Pod and Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA). The validity of BIA devices is not studied well in overweight elderly. Aim To evaluate the validity of two BIA devices, Tanita and Body Scout, compared with Bod Pod (Air Displacement Plethysmography) as reference method. Results of this study can be used to advise dieticians for using BIA devices to measure body composition of overweight elderly. Methods Ninety-eight healthy overweight elderly (50+) were included in this study. Body composition (FM and FFM) was measured by using Bod Pod, Tanita BC-418 and Body Scout Fresenius Kabi. Results The root mean squared error is almost equal for both BIA devices, so the reproducibility is the same. The bias (mean difference) for FM (kg and %) and FFM (kg) is less for the Body Scout than for Tanita compared with Bod Pod. Conclusion The bias for FM is less for Body Scout (-1,9kg ±4,3) as compared to Tanita (-2,9kg ±3,8). Measurements done by using Body Scout are more valid than using Tanita in groups. To measure individuals, Tanita is more valid compared to Body Scout. Reproducibility for Tanita and Body Scout compared to Bod Pod are comparable.
