Samenvatting

Introduction One of the small-scale food systems that recently is being re-developed throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States, are regional food systems. ETC Foundation noticed that public, policy, and research interest in the concept of regional food systems has begun to grow and that a movement has started. ETC Foundation would like to respond to this growing interest by develop its own knowledge on the relatively new concept of regional food systems. ETC Foundation is especially interested in regional food systems because they are known to be capable of building livable communities, strengthen the regional economy, improve access to food, and improve consumer health. Overall, regional food systems are able to enhance the environmental, economic, social, and nutritional health of a particular region. Methods Desk research and interviews were used in this research to obtain the information needed. To obtain the necessary information, the snowball technique was used. The snowball technique provided multiple recently published scientific research papers and identified several examples of existing regional food systems. Four regional food systems throughout the global north were chosen to further analyze how they are being developed. Five semi-structured phone interviews were used in this research to identify what the essential elements are for the development of regional food systems. Only interviews with initiators that are working on the development of regional food systems, with a direct link to the regional food system, were included. To learn from the development of regional food systems elsewhere than the global north, a successful food system initiative in Belo Horizonte, located in Brazil, has been identified and is further analyzed too. Results This research found that an ideal regional food system is a food system which is environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable; resilient (being able to withstand and recover from shocks); and self-reliant (supplying as much of the key nutritious foods in the region as physically possible without degrading natural resources). The essential elements for the development of regional food systems that were found in this research include a list of essential elements. Conclusion This research found multiple essential elements for the development of regional food systems around the world. However, not all the essential elements are necessary for the development of a regional food system. It seems that every region is unique and that they all require a different combination of several essential elements in order to be able to develop their regional food system.
