Samenvatting

Urinary incontinence (UI) has been described as the involuntary leakage of urine. Twice as common for women as for men, it is often experienced for the first time during or after pregnancy. UI has a negative impact on the personal and social lives of these women. Conservative therapies are the preferred first-line intervention, as pharmacological and surgical options may not be cost effective for the individual or the community. The objective of this paper: to research which conservative interventions are currently available to effectively prevent and treat UI in pre- andpostpartum women. A total of 31 articles were used for the analysis. Comparisons of interventions proved difficult due to conflicting results, protocols, and intervention regimens. There was insufficient evidence available on interventions other than PFMT to be able to come to a conclusion as to which interventions, or combination thereof, exert the most beneficial effect on pre- and postpartum UI. Conclusion: More awareness should be brought to the problem of UI in pre- and postpartum women. It could be advantageous toimplement standardized interventions and protocols for this population, as well as offer specialized pre- or postpartumprograms, available to all women. More research is needed to determine the most appropriate and acceptable interventions for this specific population.
