Samenvatting

The topic of our PAP is to see what effect Nintendo Wii training has on balance performance regarding the risk of falling in Parkinson´s patients. In order to answer this question our project consisted of three parts: scientific thesis, a pilot study and a practical book for Parkinson´s disease patients. After searching for the available data it is important to highlight the fact that unconventional treatments play a big role in the physiotherapy field. The symptoms of PD vary among patients and many treatments are available. There is no golden standard when choosing a treatment for PD patients. Taking that into consideration we wanted to find evidence supporting Nintendo Wii as a potential physiotherapy tool. Further research is needed to see the effect of balance training using the Nintendo Wii and more sensitive evaluation methods should be taken into consideration. Future studies should examine whether longer training sessions, intervention time or increased number of participants would improve the outcomes. Although our pilot study showed no significance effect on balance performance with PD patients, a number of advantages were found in the articles (direct and indirect evidence) about the Nintendo Wii.
