Samenvatting

At the request of the teachers at the ROC van Amsterdam College West, Cure department, this research focuses on the potential weaknesses in the structure of the English programme for the BBL (part-time, adult) students. Recently, English became obligatory for all MBO level 4 students; it is a module students have to pass in order to graduate. This research focuses on the structure of the programme combined with the factors of age but also motivation, confidence and anxiety, in other words, the affective filter. Students were also asked to give their opinion on the structure of the programme, by asking them what they would change if they could. The potential weakness that was most evident also turned out to be a great strength; the lack of a set curriculum for English. Apart from the final attainment levels (CEFR level B1 for the receptive and A2 for the productive skills), there is no finalized agreement considering the English programme. The current structure is based on an oral agreement between the English coordinator, who also teaches the groups, and the team manager. This is a weakness because, as a result, not every student has access to the same amount of lessons; this number fluctuates between zero and ten. Students do not feel like English is a valid module in the curriculum, even though they are required to pass the final exam. It is a strength because it provides the teacher with flexibility and therefore the option to tutor the weaker students. By tutoring students in small groups the teachers creates a safe learning environment in which the affective filter is down. As for the age of the students, this turned out to be a strength rather than a weakness, because the adult students are able to take responsibility for their own learning. Other identified potential weaknesses were the time of the tutoring sessions (at the end of the school day which influences the students’ focus) and the fact that this programme focuses mostly on getting the weaker students up to speed rather than challenging the stronger students to develop their English skills.
