Samenvatting

QUOTES “They said I can be anything’. Growing up as a kid, we are being told we can be anything. However, when we get older we realise we are limited by gender roles, social rules and expectations of others. We can be anything, as long as we blend in. But why do we need to blend in? What is wrong with standing out?” “What would menswear look like if it was not defined by and subjected to gender roles?” TABLE OF CONTENTS PAPER Title: Entity: the limitless body 1) Gender roles: the undefined body 2) Kazimir Malevich: the abstracted body 3) Oskar Schlemmer: the extended body 4) Panamarenko: the mechanical body COLLECTION THEMES The research I did brought me to two main themes; dazzle camouflage and the Memphis movement. DAZZLE CAMOUFLAGE was used on the battle ships during World War II. Where camouflage is usually used as a tool to hide yourself, dazzle camouflage does the opposite thing. Because the ships cannot hide themselves on the horizon, they decided to do the opposite and stand out. This was done by the use of graphic prints, which seems to deform the ships. The graphic prints were confusing, because of the recognizable framework, the ship, was completely covered in prints that seemed to change the perspective of the viewer. This inspired me to use the same shaping principal in my collection. I chose to take the traditional menswear wardrobe as recognizable framework, from where I started to deform the garments into ‘anything’. This resulted into designs which focus on shape experiment, but still have traditional menswear references. From the MEMPHIS MOVEMENT I took inspiration for print and color. The Memphis movement designed furniture in the 80s, which could actually be anything. A lamp did not look like a lamp, but it could have been anything. The designs are made up of different shapes collaged together. This fun and playful way of designing inspired me to also approach my designs in a fun and almost child-like way. From the Memphis movement I also took inspiration for bold colors and graphical prints.
