Hospitality Values

Advisory Report for the Professorship Experience in Hospitality and Leisure

Samenvatting

The managment question to be solved in this thesis is: how do values as a form of intrinsic motivation influence the motives to work on the operational level in the hospitality industry and how can they be recognised, measured and implemented in the hotel industry to help hotel managers optimise selection and motivation?
This has been researched with a single, holistic case study with both quantitative and qualitative research elements.
The results of this research indicate that there are four values that influence the career decisions of Dutch, future hotel (management) professionals. These are benevolence, hedonism, stimulation and self-direction. From which the first two are associated positively with working in the industry, stimulation is undecided and self-direction is associated negatively. Furthermore, the other values are expected to have an indirect influence through their relation with these values.
The advice is built around the idea that the model researched can be implemented in the hiring and motivation practices of SME hotels.
