Samenvatting

Axon Digital Design B.V. wants to know if it is possible to add more functionality to their current Synapse GTD hardware by measuring the performance of media compression software running on that embedded platform. By finding out what compression methods are possible and what transcoding speeds can be achieved, with real-time compressing in mind, if real-time compression is possible this Synapse product can handle functionality which normally is handled by TRACS modules

The open-source software FFmpeg is used to certify this. FFmpeg is a multimedia framework able to decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter and play almost any media that humans and machines have created. In the core of the FFmpeg sourcecode a benchmark test is created which can measure all processing times, while compressing raw audio and video sequences. Therefor a transcoding pipeline is created using different settings which benchmarks each process step.

The Synapse GTD platform is able to do real-time compression of a YUV4:2:0 planar 8-bit CIF input video and a PCM 48,000 kHz 24-bit raw audio stream as input. For real-time encoding the MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and H.264 video codecs can be used at all quality and bitrate settings. For audio encoding only the build-in MP2 encoder is reliable, at the full bitrate range up to 192kbit/s for a stereo channel. It is impossible to encode SD video frames in real-time.

Every framework where the pipeline can be adjusted is able to implement this benchmark tool to test the performance of the framework. This benchmark tool is tested on the GStreamer framework, which also retrieves reliable results.
