In the period of time from December 2000 to May 2001 a group of students, writing their thesis, have researched possible physiotherapeutic interventions for patients with peripheral facial nerve paresis.
The main question is: "What possibilities are there in the field of the physiotherapy for the treatment of peripheral facial nerve paresis!" To answer this question a literature study was made on possible treatments. This literature study included sixty-seven books and articles, twenty-four of which were descriptive studies and one was an effect study.
The literature studied, proved that the most common physiotherapeutic interventions were the following: P.N.F., N.D.T., mime therapy, physical applications and massages.
After the completion of the study, the following conclusions can be drawn:
The studied physiotherapeutic interventions have not yet been scientifically researched adequately enough to draw any conclusions concerning their applications and effectiveness.
The relative obscurity of the physiotherapeutic interventions has resulted in the fact that many patients, diagnosed with peripheral facial nerve paresis are not referred for physiotherapy, when many patients suffering from this disorder do indeed qualify for treatment. In case patients are referred by their physician, they are often referred for physical applications. Other physiotherapeutic interventions, however, are rarely mentioned.
Patients diagnosed with peripheral facial nerve paresis can be referred to private practices, institutions, or hospitals. The researchers conclude that treatment of patients with this diagnosis is best carried out in an institution or in a hospital, because of the possibility of a multidisciplinary approach.
