Risk subgrouping and physical activity in patients with non-specific low back pain

Samenvatting

Non-specific low back pain (LBP) is one of the most prevailing health problems worldwide, with a life-time prevalence of 38.9%. In almost 85% of low back pain patients, a patho-anatomical diagnosis cannot be distinguished. The estimation is that between 5.0% and 10.0% of LBP will develop into chronic low back pain (CLBP). Reduced physical activity (PA) in patients with low back pain increases the risk of developing CLBP. However, the assumption that back pain leads to decreased activity levels is not applicable in all patients within the CLBP group and not all patients will benefit from increasing activity levels as written in the guidelines. The correlation between risk subgrouping and PA was explored by analysing cross-sectional data in 16 LBP patients. There was no significant correlation (p = 0,282) between risk of developing persistent LBP and PA. However, promising mean differences in time spent on sedentary activity, light PA and moderate-to- vigorous PA was found. Further research has to be conducted with a larger sample size and even distribution of patients.
