Samenvatting

NPS developed a dedicated Diesel Engine Control Unit (MCU) for industrial and generating-set engines. The purpose of this development was to implement an own controller for several applications. The reasons are various, the modernization in shipping, more flexibility and economic benefits. The MCU is an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) usable for control of machine / process. The current MCU is not (yet) suitable for marine applications, without some basic changes/ additions. The main research questions are:
1. Basic control strategies requested (output benchmark study)
2. Data communication platform: NMEA, CAN, RS232
3. Visual representation of the information on a (touch) screen
4. Clarify / study certification rules (Lloyds, ABS, DNV, BV)
5. Additional control / diagnostics

The solutions of the problems are possible in different ways. There can be a discussion about the available communication protocols, structural build-up, graphic placement of components on HMI, necessary functions and which parameters displayed also the necessary alarms. The benchmark is used for the choice which features the MCU must have suitable for marine applications. With the basic strategy is possible results of discussion to be used for changes and modifications without impact on MCU.
Furthermore always applies: A good standardized design is superior to an optimized custom design

The following target groups selected for design of the marine MCU. These different groups were taken from the leisure and commercial market:
1) Mega-yachts officially commercial market trough the dimensions. But used for recreational purposes, they Ocean going vessels with the most certification rules. This group can be applied the MCU as gen-set control
2) Specialty ships is commercial, most of time are these sailing near coastal. This group applied the MCU as propulsion control.
3) River Barge are ships sailing on inland waterways and is commercial. In these vessels, the MCU may be used for control of gen-set
4) River Yachts are yachts that sail on inland waterways and is a recreational. The MCU can be used as propulsion control.

Research has shown that target groups different versions need as propulsion and generating-set controller. A propulsion controller is primarily aimed at supporting and improving the propulsion. The generating-set controller has an important task to protect the generating-set. Hereby, depending on the application required a basic or intermediate variant. Multivariate is find a better solution applicable to the target groups. The next distinction is to be found in MCU variants, a basic and intermediate variant for propulsion and as gen-set controller. The proposed intermediate variant is an extension / addition to the basic variant.

The strategy focuses on a modular design based on function blocks. The Function Block (FB) concept is typical of the type of solution offered by automation systems companies. Function Blocks are the equivalent to Integrated Circuits, ICs, representing a specialized control functions. The following function blocks are selected with the aid of the requirements of the target groups.
• Monitoring
• Protection
• Emergency and redundancy
• Diagnosis and fault system
• Loop Control

These functions are important to fit the requirements of the above mentioned target groups
In this way it is possible to create suitable systems with right combinations of functions blocks. Portability and mobility are essential in many applications. For example this includes involving Configuration, Data collection, Monitoring, Diagnostics and Troubleshooting. Today there many solutions to send the data to the operator, with Wi-Fi or GSM network to a phone or tablet etc. This solution is practice and comfortable so the device have the required hardware. Research has shown that the communication capabilities of the MCU have been very limited due to the absence of a good communication interface.
