Samenvatting

Motorcycles are a vehicle type which is still little understood. Still, research focuses on the self-stabilizing effects of motor-cycles and its steering characteristics. Were we to know more, we would be able to support a driver when he is in need of assistance like any driver is being assisted in most modern cars. This thesis report doesn’t provide in an answer on how active safety for motorcycles can be improved, but it has laid a foundation for others to perform research into the interest-ing field of motorcycles and its drivers.

The thesis assignment is to yield realistic motorcycle and driver simulation models which preferably had been validated through experimental testing. The thesis report “Motorcycle and driver design and implementation” describes the approach and realization of the qualitatively realistic simulation models of a driver and the Yamaha FZ6 test platform provided by Yamaha Europe for HAN Automotive.. A study into the behavior of both the driver and the motorcycle has been performed which forms the basis for the modeling approach. The motorcycle simulation model has been realized with SimMechanics while the simulated driver is mostly created with Simulink. Parallel to the design process of the motorcycle model, the test platform has been developed by a project group of Bachelor students. These students succeeded in realizing a 2D data acquisition system implementation on the FZ6. The test vehicle has been used to perform experimental tests on a closed circuit with the purpose of acquiring data with which the simulation models of the motorcycle and driver have been validated.
