The inter- and intrarater reliability of a multiple repetition maximum test protocol for the chest press and leg extension

Samenvatting

Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the inter- and intrarater reliability of a modified
multiple repetition maximum (MRM) protocol (6-10 repetitions) for the Chest Press and Leg
Extension in a heterogeneous group “healthy” Institute of Paramedical Studies (IPS) students whom
have experience with resistance training. So that in the future a standard could be prepared to
quantify clients' muscle strength.
Methods: The researchers included two healthy women (21,50 ± 0,71 range: 21-22) and ten healthy
men (22,30 ± 1,89 range: 18 - 25). Muscle strength from the subjects were acquired on Technogym’s
Chest Press and Leg Extension using the modified MRM protocol. The protocol has been written by
the investigators based up on the literature. Descriptive statistics will be applied to make the
measurements visually transparent.
Before any parametric or non-parametric analysis can be applied a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test will be
conducted to determine if the variables have a normal distribution. Based upon the distribution of
the variables a non-parametric or parametric test e.g. Spearman’s test or the Intraclass Correlation
Coefficient (ICC) will be applied to calculate the intra- and interraterreliability.
Results: Kolgomorov-Smirnov test was negative. Ten subjects where included for the intrarater
reliability and nine subjects where included for the interrater reliability. The intrarater reliability for
the Chest Press is 0,972 (95% CI (0,879 – 0,993)) and 0,855 (95% CI (0,225 – 0,968)) for the Leg
Extension. Interrater reliability for the Chest Press is 0,925 (95% CI (0,707 – 0,982)) and for the Leg
Extension the ICC is 0,860 (95% CI (0,491 – 0,967)).
Conclusion: The results of this study are promising. There are a lot of variables that influence the
outcomes and therefore need to be standardized. The research group recommends that the validity
of this protocol needs to be determined.
