Samenvatting

The last decade several prototypes of fuel cell busses have been presented [1, 2]. A closer observation of these prototypes shows remarkable differences in both sizing and control of the system components. Some busses are essentially electric vehicles with a relative low power fuel cell system used as range extender [1, 3]. Extensive use of the batteries reduces the system fuel efficiency and may compromise battery endurance. Other vehicles have a fuel cell system with stack power comparable to the power level of the electric drive motor [1]. Apart from a larger investment in fuel cell power, this results in relatively large variations in the stack load with the risk of stack lifetime reduction.
