Samenvatting

This thesis is about the implications of the EU External Action Service (EEAS) of the European Union (EU) in the Israel-Palestine region. The first part gives an insight in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict so as to attain a better understanding of the complexity of this problem area. The second part discusses the EU’s role within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and provides a summary of a number of EU attempts to solve the conflict. Also included is an explanation of the EU’s relationship with Israel and with the Palestinian Authority (PA). The third part explains and critically assesses a number of the EU’s attempts that were carried out with the idea of reaching sustained peace in the Middle East and realising the objective of a two-state solution. The dissertation ends with a number of conclusions. It appears that the policy-design of the EEAS in relation to Israel is based on economic relations and trade. The policy-design rewarded to the PA is based on development aid and the realisation of a Palestinian state.
