Samenvatting

The demand of renewable energy in the European Union is increasing significantly in order to reduce CO2 emissions. Efforts are being made for further development of biomethane and hydrogen to use it as a clean and sustainable fuel for vehicles. However, biomethane and hydrogen contains impurities
that can damage the fuel cell system. The impurities can ensure the formation of corrosive gases from combustion or reforming, this can affect light metals in combustion engines, it also affects long-term performance of the fuel cell. To make it possible for biofuel to be implemented in the natural gas grid and for use as fuel for vehicles, it’s important to minimize the impurities.
A method for quantification of the impurities has previously been developed, but at this point it is not possible to enable SI-traceable calibration and accurate measurements results. That makes the aim of this research to validate a magnetic suspension balance method and to develop a fit-for-purpose measurement standard for these parameters to enable SI-traceable calibration and accurate measurement results. The following research questions have been formed: What is the effect of temperature and flow on the measurements? What are the optimal settings where the least disturbance of the weighing occurs? For the validation experiment the parameters repeatability, reproducibility, stability and response time were examined. The results obtained have shown that validation is completed. After completing the validation, preliminary results within one of the application areas of the MSB, the development of standardized method for determining the mole fractions of HF in biomethane will be presented.
