Samenvatting

Sorption-enhanced reforming of methane is an attractive option for the combination of hydrogen production and the capture and storage of CO2. In this process a CO2 sorbent is integrated in the steam methane reforming process. In this report, several potential CO2 sorbents are described and K2CO3 promoted hydrotalcites were examined for their suitability as CO2 adsorbent. Several aspects were investigated like: syntheses temperature, weight percentage of K2CO3 and adsorbing temperature. Characterizations of (promoted) hydrotalcites were performed with XRD, N2 physisorption and SEM. The CO2 adsorption capacities were determined with on-line FT-IR. Promoting hydrotalcites with K2CO3 caused a significant increase in CO2 adsorption capacity compared to non-promoted hydrotalcites. The impregnation of hydrotalcites with K2CO3 increased the adsorption capacity of CO2, probably due to an increased basicity of hydrotalcite. A disadvantage of promotions was the appearance of bulk K2CO3, which had a blocking effect on the pores of hydrotalcite. This had a negative influence on the accessibility of the pores for CO2. An optimum amount of wt% K2CO3, was determined at 11 wt%. Hydrotalcite synthesized at 30°C with 11 wt% of K2CO3 showed the most favorable adsorption-desorption profiles and had an adsorption capacity of 0.33 mmol CO2 /per gram HT.
