Samenvatting

I've always wondered why the 'plain text' book has survived thus far and whether this will remain to be the case with the arrival of the new media. As a Cross Media Designer, it would have been a more logical step to make a media production. But I believe that reading has its own merits and rewards in comparison to the viewing, playing, and/or listening experience. It's from this background that my research focuses on the future of the written story as an experience and, since I'm a maker and a doer by heart, I also wonder how I can contribute to relevant observations in this regard. In this essay I will try to answer the following questions: (1) What phenomena might influence the written story in the next years and what can I contribute to this? (2) What is a reading experience and what genres represent typical reading experiences? (3) What aspects from gaming, social media and reading devices could have an effect on the written story? (4) What new literary genres as reading experiences may develop as a result of these current developments?
