Abstract
Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are more common among adolescent female soccer players than among their male peers. It is unclear how the high incidence of ACL injuries in female soccer players can be reduced. Aim of the study: The aim of this study is to systematically review the current literature on ACL injury prevention programs consisting of plyometric, strength, balance and agility exercises for female soccer players. Target group: Physical therapists, soccer coaches and athletic trainers. Methods: The PubMed database was systematically searched for clinical trials on ACL injury prevention among adolescent female soccer players. Retrieved articles were scored for methodological quality by the PEDro scale. Results: Five clinical trials were included in this review. All employed a multi- or single component prevention program. In three studies, the prevention program significantly reduced the incidence of ACL injuries. Conclusion: Injury prevention programs consisting of strength, plyometric, and agility exercises reduced the risk of ACL injuries in adolescent female soccer players. It is however unclear which combination of exercise and stimulus parameters is the most effective in reducing the risk of ACL injury.
