Problem definition
Mamelodi is a township located in the northeast of Pretoria and was established in 1945 to provide accommodation
for the black settlement who where removed from the centre area during the apartheid era. Mamelodi is one of the
larges townships in the area of Pretoria and is still growing as a place where the poorer people try to make a living.
To accommodate the black people who worked in the factories near Mamelodi, singles hostels where build in the
west side of Mamelodi.
Because of the poor circumstances and horrid state of the hostels there appeared a question about the competence
of this area. The hostels are situated near the centre of Mamelodi and therefore have a lot of potential. Nowadays
there is a lot of criminality taking place as a result of the squatters that are living in the hostels.
Research aim
The research aim for this report is to design new social housing in the Shangaan area. All residents have their own
private space but the communal areas are the central place between the buildings to stimulate social meeting.
The aim is also to make the building and the areas between safer and more social.
The main question
What are the possibilities for redevelopment of the Shangaan hostels for social housing?
Results
We made an urban- and building design for the Shangaan area based on the framework and ONPO analyses. Our
buildings are easy to build because we use local building methods and local materials.
The design provides a safe, comfortable and social area to live in.
