Samenvatting

Gear transmission systems are widely used in a variety of applications in many industries, including automobile, railway, wind energy and the shipping industry. A gearbox breakdown may result in catastrophic failures and significant economic losses. A gearbox fault can cause damage to a propulsion system and can keep the ship paralysed for months in the harbour. Therefore, choosing the best maintenance strategy for the asset is the first step in the right direction to ensure safe and reliable equipment. Reliable recognition of fault type and assessment of fault severity is essential for decision making in Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). Condition Monitoring (CM) is used by ships owners to access propulsion trains health by detecting gearbox failures and planning for operations and maintenance.
This research provides an insight on which maintenance strategy meets the maintenance goals of company Jan De Nul (JDN) and which monitoring techniques meets several criteria for ensuring a reliable propulsion gearbox on the vessels of the company. This research is concentrated on the propulsion gearbox of the trailing suction hopper dredger Vasco Da Gama. The Vasco da Gama is one of the ships of company Jan De Nul.
The research on board of the Vasco Da Gama is focused on the failure modes, their causes and the possibility’s to detect them in an early stage.
The Failure Mode Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA) completed by a group of engineers on board of the ship, gives an overall idea about the failure modes and the effects on the propulsion gearbox. In the FMECA all possible failures for a certain system are identified and the effects of these failures are described.
A desk research about all the faults that were detected and recorded in the past on the propulsion gearboxes of the Vasco Da Gama provides an insight of all the failures that happened on the gearbox.
The addendum gathered from information of company SKF and the reports from inspections and overhauls complement the FMECA.
Monitoring techniques are used for detecting faults on equipment in an early stage. On board of the trailing suction hopper dredger Vasco Da Gama, SPM measurements are performed by the technicians. These measurements are carried out on a regularly base and partly supported by the maintenance program AMOS. Taking measurements the last year and analysing the complete data from 2010 (first use of SPM) proves that condition monitoring provides detection of faults and damages on the propulsion gearbox. Not all of the damage is clearly visible with the used monitoring system of SPM. Therefore, the use of combined monitoring techniques gives a complete coverage of the most common failures on the gearbox.
A questionnaire is completed by decision makers of the company JDN about which maintenance strategy meets the maintenance goals of company Jan De Nul and which monitoring techniques meets several criteria for ensuring a reliable propulsion gearbox. The outcome of the questionnaire assists decision makers in the evaluation and selection of maintenance strategies and particular condition monitoring techniques. Time Based Maintenance (TBM) supported by one or more condition monitoring techniques meets the goals and criteria of the company. For choosing the best monitoring techniques a separate research should be done. This research should also cover the financial impact of implementing the monitoring techniques. Implementing and fully integrating the monitoring techniques into the used maintenance program AMOS will result in a more reliable installation. The influence of costs by failure and downtime will be reduced in a significant way.
Not only the insight but also minimizing the non-availability of an installation and minimizing the costs are important reasons for writing this report.
