This report describes and analyzes the Knowledge Management situation of Jumbo. The report starts with a brief introduction about the importance of knowledge in the nowadays society. Hereafter it contains a description about the meaning of Knowledge and Knowledge Management including its main objectives and aspects. After the description of its definitions and objectives will attention be paid to its implementation within an organisation. Besides a detailed overview of all different aspects of a proper implementation of in general, this report will be focused on the Knowledge Management situation within Jumbo. This starts with an explanation about the reason why Jumbo should try to improve its Knowledge Management. This is followed by an analysis of the Knowledge Management situation within the Jumbo organisation. This analysis is performed by distributing a questionnaire among the office employees. By means of this questionnaire the employees could give their opinion regarding the application of different Knowledge Management aspects within Jumbo. After reviewing the results of this questionnaire, one specific aspect is selected for further investigation.
Only one aspect was valued as insufficient. This aspect concerned the used systems by Jumbo, especially the software program Filelinx. The report will focus on the exact reasons behind this opposition. Is this opposition for example caused by technical malfunctions, are there mistakes made during its introduction stage or are the users maybe self to blame of this discontent? The poor results justify a more detailed research regarding the performance of Filelinx, especially because it plays an important role in the Knowledge Management of Jumbo. Because the role of Filelinx is already described in the first part of this thesis, this part will be focused on its strong- and weak points. This additional research starts with an analysis of the differences between the previous used Shared Network Drives and the present system Filelinx. Besides that this resulted in an independent comparison between the two systems, the author obtained also valuable user experience with both systems.
After the gaining of some personal impressions, the next step was to obtain the opinion of the regular users. Therefore several employees were interviewed regarding their personal experience with the program. The interviews focused on items as the possible advantages and disadvantages of Filelinx, the integration of Filelinx at their job, the way on which Jumbo introduced the program within the organisation, the provided training and support, etcetera. This report contains a selection of the most striking remarks which are made during this interviews. The complete transcriptions of the interviews are added as an appendix.
With all this collected information and opinions in mind, an answer should be found for the question if the situation can be improved and how this should happen. This quest starts with a brief description of the characteristics and objectives of the different available systems that may improve the Knowledge Management situation. Because every system lives or dies with the way it is implemented in the organisation, it is of the upmost importance to learn of the mistakes from the past. For this reason a plan is developed about how a system like Filelinx should be introduced to guarantee the optimal results. This plan contains a number of detailed selection criteria which should be fulfilled by a program, in order to comply with the Jumbo standards. The next step is to find a hypothetical alternative to Filelinx. What product there are available on the market and what their characteristics are. And the most important question is of course, will the Knowledge Management of Jumbo be improved by this product? Last but not least will the possibilities of an Intranet be discussed.
