Samenvatting

This document describes the research in Virtual Private Networks which has been held by Arjan Hout, student at the Hogeschool Zeeland.
The research is part of the "Working Tomorrow" program for client LogicaCMG where new technologies are tested on possibilities and feasibility.

The research focus is on VPN and CA server and the goal is to combine these techniques. Both techniques are described in this document and especially their safety and security issues are investigated. Also the advantages and disadvantages of the VPN with CA are comprised with the traditional VPN where passwords and keys are pre-set.

Because LogicaCMG will be using Cisco hardware and Microsoft software for realization of VPN, this research is limited to these products. (Cisco2621 and WinServer2003 CA server)
The demonstration simulates two company networks which are connected via VPN. The authentication for the VPN is arranged by a CA server.

The research learns us that a VPN connection based on IPSec and a CA server doesn't need much adaptation of the infrastructure of both companies. Just the CA server needs to be placed in the extranet of one of the companies. Further more this method of VPN connection isn't that different from traditional VPN connections based on IPSec and preshared keys.

The research did prove that VPN based on IPSec and a CA server is far more secure than traditional VPN, mainly because certificates are automatically renewed without human interference. Newly arised security risks can be limited by cutting in the service functionality of the server and extra protection of the server.
