Samenvatting

Growing diverse algae species in a tubular photobioreactor is increasing its popularity due to the many advantages and benefits it can implement on the growth of different algae cultures. In relation to sustainability, this method of cultivation of a specific species of algae, Tetraselmis suecica, can be considered a pilot project due to its innovative use of wastewater as a growth medium. An analysis of four different biomass concentrations with variable nutrient supplements was conducted in order to obtain the best outlook. The four runs were as following: 0.5 g L-1 biomass concentration on only wastewater, 0.75 g L-1 with 7.5 mg L-1 P, 0.75 g L-1 with 10 mg L-1 P and 1.0 g L-1 with 10 mg L-1 P. The obtained results at a biomass concentration of 0.5 g L-1 on only wastewater showed N and P purification efficiencies of 49.4 % and 99.0 % respectively. The highest obtained results were observed at a biomass concentration of 1.0 g L-1 with N and P purification efficiencies of 95.7 % and 99 % respectively..
The average net volumetric productivity increased with the increase of the biomass concentration. When the biomass concentration was 0.5 g L-1, the volumetric productivity was 0.35 g L-1 d-1, while for 1.0 g L-1 it increased up to 0.52 g L-1 d-1.
The results from this research can serve as a suggestion for possible use in a relevant Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture project
