Samenvatting

This research was conducted as a part of the bachelor program of Delta Management at the HZ University of applied sciences in Middelburg, The Netherlands. Collaborating with the Can Tho University in Can Tho, Vietnam. As a part of an ongoing efforts to limit floating macro plastic pollution. This research looks in to the use of structures made out of recycled retrieved macro river plastics, for floating agriculture in the Mekong delta. As plastic pollution is having major effect on the marine ecosystems. A solution needs to be found to prevent this. The goal is to increase the livelihoods and create resilience for people who suffer from flooding and erosion. Previous research has been done on a plastic catcher and a use for the recycled plastic is needed. This research looked into the needs and demands of local communities to apply this novel technique. Based on a layer analysis a research area has been picked. In total there are 2 main sites. One in Can Tho and the other in Long Xuyen. Interaction with local inhabitants, local government and delta experts helped form the answer to the research questions. The data that has been collected during this period formed the answers to the sub-question. The answers of the sub-question created the input for a sustainable livelihood framework. This formed the answer to the main research question. Stating that floating agriculture could be a good option to reach a sustainable livelihood. Especially financially and natural capital could be increased based on these findings an extended recommendation plan has been created. As locals had a lot more different ideas on the uses of the technique. Further research should be done to the implantation of the technique. On top of that, other uses for this technique could be implemented in the delta to generate sustainable livelihood meeting the local needs.
