Samenvatting

The RAAK PRO project ‘Saline production’ has started from September in 2013. It is to optimize near shore shellfish culture in Veerse Meer, Oosterschelde and Grevelingen in the South West Delta Region. This big project is going to investigate six different species which are Mytilus edulis , Crassostrea gigas, Ostrea edulis, Tapes philippinarum, Cerastoderma edule, Chlamys opercularis.
This final thesis was the beginning of this big project. It was to find the optimal set of the parameter values of the different species of shellfish in the existing Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) Model. This thesis was to investigate four species of shellfish: Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas, Tapes philippinarum and Cerastoderma edule. The goal of the whole project is to increase on site shellfish production, based on sea based circumstances like temperature and food availability and develop a decision support tool for the farmers. The farmers will increase the production of shellfish and get more profits by controlling some factors. The control factors are the initial length of the seed of shellfish, the times and the amount of shellfish thinning, the density of the seed and the time when the shellfish are submerged in the water.
The main question of the thesis was “What are the optimal sets of the DEB parameter values for the four species of shellfish in the existing DEB model for simulating the growth of the shellfish in southwest delta of the Netherlands?”
There were three important parts being investigated which was formulated to three sub questions as follows:
• What are the optimal sets of parameter values for each specific shellfish?
• How good do the different species of shellfish grow in different water systems based on the optimal set of parameter values?
• What parameters are sensitive to the growth performance (Length, Wet weight and the Quantity of the flesh of the shellfish (AFDW/V))?
The methods of the final thesis were being done by the following steps. Firstly the parameter values of different species of shellfish from different literature sources and the variables in different water systems were looked for. Then the growth performances of the specific shellfish in different water systems were simulated by RStudio software. After simulation, the growth performances were validated by Validation index and the optimal sets of the parameter values of the different species of shellfish were determined. If the simulation was resemble the field data which were from some literature sources, the growth performances of the shellfish were investigated based on the optimal set of parameter values. Else new parameter values were searched again and the simulation were redone based on the optimal parameter values. Finally the sensitivity of the parameters was researched by comparing the Sensitivity index.
Through comparing the validation indexes and simulation results, the optimal sets of DEB parameter values of Mytilus edulis, Tapes philippinarum and Cerastoderma edule were from IMARES which is a Dutch research institute. And Crassostrea gigas was used the set of parameter values from one literature source which title was ‘Growth and reproductive simulation of candidate shellfish species at fish cages in the Southern Mediterranean: Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) modelling for integrated multi-trophic aquaculture’. (G.Sarà, 2011)The shellfish can grow the most optimal in Veerse Meer and the worst in Lodijkse Gat which is the eastern part of Oosterschelde. It was possible for low food concentration in Lodijkse Gat. Tl (lower boundary of tolerance range) had the biggest effects to the growth performance of shellfish. Ev (Volume-specific energy-content of structural tissues) and start of simulation Dospawn (At start of simulation there is no spawning) have not any effects on the growth performance of shellfish in the DEB model. Overall the parameters affected the wet weight bigger than length and AFDW/V.
In the future, the parameter values can be experimented more times in order to improve the simulation results of DEB model. Because the water temperature at different water depth was different, it will be better if the environmental data can be got in actual depth of shellfish living. The AFDW/V of Manila clam in the simulation based on the parameter values from IMARES increased over the time and it should change in a certain range. The wet weight of Pacific oyster in the simulation based on the parameter values from Add my pet was too small (1 gram) which should be more than 50 gram. The reasons were not found in the thesis, therefore the parameter values or DEB model itself could be investigated again in the future.
