By reading this research justification, the reader will gain a better understanding of how the Dow Chemical Company can improve its relationship with its small raw material suppliers. Since Dow is a large international organization that operates all over the globe, it is only natural that it deals with a large number of raw material suppliers, some of which are large corporations themselves, whilst others are smaller and have less power. This research was conducted in the span of 4 months, and various topics have been investigated in order to get as much vital information as possible. The main areas that were researched were communication, transparency, relationship, capabilities and failure recovery. By addressing important issues that occur within these areas, the relationship between Dow and its small raw material suppliers can be improved.

The information gaps that were formulated for this research were the following:
1. The Dow Chemical company has limited knowledge of the current relationships with smaller raw material suppliers for the Dow Coatings Material department.
2. The Dow Chemical Company lacks insights into the current performance of their small raw material suppliers.
3. What would be the recommendations for the company.

In order the answers these information gaps in the best possible way, desk and field research had been conducted. The field research was conducted via internal surveys, i.e., by sending surveys to Dow raw material planners, and external, by interviewing and sending surveys to the small raw material suppliers and some large ones as well.

Through this research it was discovered that certain points are lacking in order to close the information gaps. If the points that were discovered are addressed, then the relationship between Dow and its small raw material suppliers will improve greatly. By looking at the results, three possible improvements can be made to close the information gaps. A more detailed description of the recommendations is located at the end of this research justification, but for convenience are also shortly listed here:
1. Organize regular feedback sessions between supply chain and suppliers.
2. Make use of Carter’s 10Cs to assess new and current suppliers.
3. Expand the use of an integrated automated SAP system.

By making use of these recommendations, Dow will be able to gain a better understanding of their relationship with small raw material suppliers and will be able to continue improving their relationships with said suppliers in the future as well.
