Samenvatting

This research aimed on finding a deeper insight in the level of support from experts and Makeni’s community towards developing community based tourism in Makeni. Therefore, this study explored the current situation, potential impacts, key factors for success, attitudes and perceptions of Makeni´s community and perceptions of experts.Street Child is a non-profit organization that aims to create educational opportunity for some of the most vulnerable children in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nepal. Street Child is exploring new ways of creating employment opportunities in Sierra Leone, one of these is tourism. Tourism is a great tool for poverty alleviation, however the involvement of the local community is crucial. Sierra Leone is undeveloped, but as the tourism industry is the largest and fastest growing industry in the world, there is a big opportunity to incorporate community based tourism development. To find out whether it is a good strategy to introduce community based tourism, a deeper insight in the support of experts and locals is necessary, because support is essential for a positive outcome. In order to analyze the matter, both a qualitative and quantitative research method were used. The data was gathered via interviews (n=14) and surveys (n=30), after which it was compared to the gathered theories. Research shows that, in general the locals support tourism and would welcome tourists in their community, however some would be annoyed or even irritated by them. Not all locals would like to become involved in tourism either. Experts believe that locals are proud and like to share their culture with others, however they do foresee some barriers to developing community based tourism in Makeni. They stress that the existing images, potential markets and collaborations should be explored. Experts explained the importance of agreement on the development. They express that it should mainly be driven by the community. According to them, the community should not become dependent on tourism.
