Copper tolerant ecotypes of Heliscus lugdunensis differ in their ecological function and growth

Samenvatting

Studies investigating metal tolerance in aquatic hyphomycetes, reported that metal tolerance
varies with the level of pollution at the fungal isolation site, highlighting the uncertainty of
whether those variances are due to tolerant species or strains. The focus of previous research
has been on the effects of metal exposure on interspecies diversity of aquatic hyphomycetes,
whereas stress responses at intraspecies level remain largely unexplored. In this study,
investigations were made on the effects of Cu on ecological function and growth of five
strains of Heliscus lugdunensis, isolated from contaminated and un-contaminated streams, in
order to examine weather strains are expressed as ecotypes with distinct growth and
functional signatures in response to metal stress.
When exposed to Cu, strains of Heliscus lugdunensis differed significantly in their litter
decomposition and reproductive activity as well as growth, depending on the Cu
concentrations at their isolation site. Strains D and E isolated from the highest Cu
concentrations, showed the highest performance and growth respectively amongst tested
strains. Strain D showed to invest more in ecological activity than growth whereas strain E
showed to invest more in growth. The results of this study deepen our understanding of metal
tolerance in aquatic hyphomycetes, as they elevate the importance of intraspecific diversity.
