Samenvatting

The tanker company Clearwater Group was looking for methods for reducing their electrical power consumption which would also cause for their yearly cost to be reduced. This thesis addresses this issue by finding out what electrical consumers are continuously running on-board MT. Cobaltwater and finding replacements and/or modifications for these systems.
Not all the continuously running electrical consumers were researched but, specifically those with the highest power consumption. In the proposal phase of the thesis a literature research was carried out mainly in order to find potential replacements for the systems already installed on-board.
In order to prove that the replacements would lead to a power reduction and also a cost reduction, the power and cost reduction induced by the replacements were calculated. This process was carried out by means of a power balance where the electrical power consumers can be found with their electrical power consumption.
In order to filter out the consumers that were continuously running the assigned load (a value which is shown in percentage and expresses the maximum load at which the equipment might be running) were used. This information was used to separate the continuously running from the non-continuously running consumers. By defining the term high consumers and low consumers with a fixed value, the highest electrical consumers were highlighted.
After creating the power balance, the total load values per mode (sea, harbour and manoeuvring) were compared to the measured values. The measured values were measured by means of a small observation research. Whereby the power consumed were monitored for the sea mode, harbour mode and manoeuvring mode. This was done over a period of 3 weeks at fixed times per day. The daily average load was then determined for each mode. This gave a comparison between the theoretical load values and the real load. Which was done to verify the accuracy of the theoretical values.
After this the power consumption and cost reduction induced by the replacements were calculated. The results showed that the power consumption was decreased by 17212.3kilowatt hour over a year period. The fuel cost that corresponds to this is anywhere between 3716.43 and 3860.76US Dollars yearly.
The answer to the research question is that a light automation system with LED lighting and a waste heat recovery system for the auxiliary generators will induce a decline in the yearly electrical consumption on-board MT. Cobaltwater.
What is recommended to the Clearwater Group is, based on the outcome of this thesis. A follow up research is needed on the basis of purchase and installation cost. If the implementations are carried out the company should ensure that it is registered in the SEEMP showing the increase in vessel fuel efficiency ratio that can be induced by the modifications carried out.
