Samenvatting

In this article the authors will explore if, and under what conditions Mission Orientated Command (MOC) can be applied in peace-supporting operations like UNPROFOR. The focus of the study is on the application of MOC within battalions on platoon or group level and is based on interviews with Dutch soldiers-privates, NCO's, officers-who served in UNPROFOR. The authors describe the Dutch doctrine of MOC; they explore under what conditions such a system would be most succesful; they provide background informations about the Dutch troops in the UNPROFOR operation and if MOC could have been successfully implemented during this operation. Finally some conclusions are drawn about what could be learned from UNPROFOR with regard to the use of MOC.
