Outdoor FAT Scope - towards more efficient usage
Outdoor FAT Scope - towards more efficient usage
Samenvatting
The outdoor model of the FAT Scope interactive binoculars by 100%FAT has marketing potential, but its current hardware setup has prohibitively high power draw from its battery. This research aims to measure the power draw, find significantly contributing components and investigate their optimization to prolong battery life over device run cycles. An experiment with creating interactive content for a user-facing demo to examine the interactive potential of the Scope is also included.
Measurements on battery drain and electrical circuit current produce reliable results, while software estimations do not. The computer on Windows operating system (OS) draws the most power and the main optimization is to force OS sleep mode when unused. Findings from other Windows settings and the running Unity application are inconclusive or insignificant.
The interactive Scope demo from this research aims to verify hypotheses about user playtime and the impact of added game experiences to the default “binoculars roam” content. Results are inconclusive due to test setup limitations, and do not strongly confirm nor deny any major impact.
Recommendations for handling future setups revolve mainly around continued research - iterations of the presented measurements are necessary after modifying the Scope, and more lightweight operating systems and game engines should be researched for potential further software optimizations.
