Samenvatting

The probation specialized in addiction problems controls and supports individuals with substance addiction who are sentenced or accused of crimes. The financial position of these individuals is often weak. Many have debts and a low income. Several studies show a positive correlation between a bad financial position, low income, bad money management and crime. However it is not clear which role financial capability plays.
The research is  carried out on locations of Tactus Verslavingsreclassering (N=50). The financial capability will be measured with a validated questionnaire, supplemented with additional questions to measure the expected chance on relapse in crime. The research design is cross-sectional.
The relation between insufficient financial capability on recidivism is examined. This question could not be answered, because the respondents are sufficient financial capable.  At the same time the financial capabilities between crime groups will be compared (property crimes , violence and property crimes together with violence).
The results demonstrate that clients of Tactus Verslavingszorg are financial capable despite the high debts, low saving and low income on or above welfare level. The results are not significantly different between crime groups. All crime groups have a financial weak position, with an average income around or just above welfare level. Most of the clients have no (N=27) to low (N=20) savings (€1 to €1200). The average debt is between €10.000 to €18.240. Estimated chance on recidivism by respondents is the same between crime groups. All crime groups estimated the chance on recidivism in crime as low (score rate between never and seldom).
In conclusion, the respondents are sufficient financial capable, all crime groups besides property delinquency are sufficient financial capable, property delinquents are just beneath the threshold determent to measure a respondent is financial capable.  There is no significant difference in financial capability between crime groups.
It is recommended to conduct further research concerning the  interaction, relation and connection of substance use, financial capability and fall back into crime.
