Samenvatting

This thesis focuses on the design and development of an emotion-evoking humanoid creature design for Morpheus Labs, to facilitate the creation of a horror VR experience in Unreal Engine 5. The project focuses on the client’s lack of knowledge about creating an effective and emotionally impactful design, as well as the need for a uniquely crafted solution, as established through a preliminary interview. The recommended solution is a character designed in 2D and 3D, which employs elements of horror media and the uncanny valley theory through distorted proportions, facial features, and movements. The product adheres to specific performance guidelines for PCVR development, ensuring seamless integration into the virtual environment. A combination of research and quantitative and qualitative testing methods was conducted to determine which design aspects should be prioritized to create a convincing design, as well as to determine the impact on the target group. A survey was conducted to determine the target audience’s perception of horror media and creature design, while multiple interviews were conducted to gather specific and qualitative information from testers. Two benchmark tests were organized for the development of a usable, optimized solution. The results reinforce the connection between humanoid creature designs and feelings of fear and discomfort, establishing that the design was successful and optimally constructed for PCVR production. Recommendations for the improvement of the product were also proposed. All in all, this report establishes a clear baseline for the development of a human-like creature design, which can emotionally impact users in a VR setting, evoking feelings of fear, unease, and anxiety.
