Graduation Report Rommert Straatsma
Samenvatting
Medisch Spectrum Twente, a general hospital in Enschede, aimed to increase their innovative
appearances to the public. One of the hospital’s solutions was through the development of an
interactive installation, capable of showing users the hospital’s current and future innovative
developments. The purpose of this research project was to establish such an illustration. In this
project, users were able to interact with the installation through buttons/sensors to change the
content digitally displayed within the installation. Three prototypes were made either physically
or in Virtual Reality. These iterations aimed to replicate the experience of the final version, with
the last iteration also replicating the physical, interactive aspect. This research focused on
testing and preparing suitable options for both the interactive switch and the communication
between the microcontroller and the displaying device. The tests replicated various aspects of
the final envisioned installation and judged each sensor appropriately on each core capability.
The tests for the sensors entertained sense range, consistency and penetration capabilities and
the connection tests invested in response time and consistency. The results, collected via the
conducted tests, narrowed down to ideal options out of the selected assortment. The best
preforming sensor component was used for the sensing of user interaction and the wired
connection was used for the communication between the microcontroller and the installation’s
display hardware. These results were used for the final iteration of this assignment and served
as recommendations for future development of the project.
