Me, We, and Us

Connecting design - rethinking tall residences for meaningful interaction and socially engaging urban environments

Samenvatting

ME, WE & US is the motto for research into residential high-rises in correlation with social isolation, targeting theories and spatial design strategies to improve human interaction. A close examination of the work by Gehl into life between buildings, by Hall about space zones, and Van de Wal ‘s ‘privacy scripts’ is conceptualized in a set of building concepts and spatial configurations. The final design for a high-rise in the center of Eindhoven is typified by the so-called social thread, a routing along stacked volumes for residential and mixed uses around an open core. Because all domains are designated and designed according to spatial and social values derived from the privacy script and notions of private, parochial and public space, the organization of the circulation in the high-rise creates clusters and destinations in the way of a combination of neighborhoods. This organization also allows the building to be open to the city floor and for urban life spread along the route. The building structure, grid and detailing are a matter of choice, and be kept generic, but in this case the importance of sightlines and visual contact over different distances is stressed in the design of the open core and the stepped configuration of the exterior facade.
