Bridging Past and Future
GeertruidenbergBridging Past and Future
GeertruidenbergSamenvatting
The historic city of Geertruidenberg owes its bulwarks and fortresses to the defense of the mouth of the river Donge, which connects it to the Biesbosch. Nowadays the city is attractive for tourists and watersports. To improve the facilities for stay and harboring, and at the same time to invigorate the local urban and environmental structure, an opportunity is found in the reconstruction of one of the yacht clubs on the river in the historic defense zone. The masterplan secures free passage to the riverbank for pedestrians, new basins for the yacht club, and additional touristic facilities. Mirroring a historic lunette across the water, a new lunette is positioned in one of the basins as the framework for a hotel and meeting spot. The exterior facades are closed with small openings; the interior facades are aligned around a sunken triangular square and create a secluded atmosphere. Seclusion is also found in the rooms and functional spaces, by intent of the designer to offer a historic, nearly mysterious, experience, which will be offset by the activities in the open air.
