Cost-effective proof-of-concept test setup for lateral tyre characteristic determination

This research developed and validated a cost-effective proof-of-concept system to measure tyre forces and moments. The C 8k setup was calibrated and verified against a wheel force transducer, demonstrating accurate measurements of the wheel axis. Road tests at the RDW test centre captured both linear and non-linear tyre behaviour, which was modelled using Pacejka’s Magic Formula parameters. Despite limited testing, the results were repeatable and consistent with the existing literature on the effects of tyre load and temperature. The study shows that reliable tyre force measurement is achievable with a simplified, scalable setup, offering a practical tool for industry applications and future tyre performance research.
