Samenvatting
This dissertation is about the succes of the EU NAVFOR Somalia - operation Atalanta. It goes deeper into the background of the pirates. It explains why they act as pirates. Further more it focusses on the first ever eu naval mission: operation Atalanta. It looks at the size, the structure, the mission and objectives and investigates the succes rate. Besides the mission other ways of fighting pirates are explained. In the end it answers the question that the EU mission is successful or not and why.
