Samenvatting

This thesis investigates the structural feasibility of a vertical extension on an existing former industrial building located in Eltville am Rhein, Germany. The case study focuses on a former cocoa factory constructed in the 1960s, which was later partially converted into residential use. Due to the original industrial function of the building, the structure was designed for significantly higher loads than those typically required for residential occupancy. This raises the possibility that the existing structure may contain sufficient reserve load-bearing capacity to support an additional storey.

The research evaluates the current structural condition of the building by analysing historical drawings, original structural calculations, and later modifications carried out between 1983 and 1990. The study examines the influence of historical German DIN standards in comparison with current Eurocodes and National Annexes relevant to the assessment and design of existing structures.

Two lightweight structural solutions for the proposed vertical extension are investigated: a timber variant and a steel variant. Both systems are assessed in terms of structural safety, feasibility, sustainability, and practical implementation. Paricular attention is given to the transfer of additional loads through the existing walls, columns, slabs, and foundations, as well as the limitations and reserve capacities of the current structural system.

The thesis aims to determine whether a structurally safe and sustainable vertical extension can be achieved while preserving the existing building. In doing so, the research contributesto the broader topic of adaptive reuse and sustainable urban development by demonstrating how existing buildings can be extended and modernised instead of demolished.
