Samenvatting

This research presents how the stop-think-do method can be adjusted, so it can be used with treating young mildly retarded people. Generally these young people act very impulsively. The stop-think-do method teaches impulsive children techniques on how to develop a better self-control. Mildly retarded people have some features on which they need a specific way of treatment. That’s why the central question is: How can the stop-think-do method from Meichenbaum or methods based on this method, be adjusted for treating young mildly retarded people? Literature studies show which aspects of the method already connect, but also which modifications are needed. Concluding there are six stop-think-do methods. When using these methods it is important to adjust the manner of speaking, repeat everything often, invest more time, take smaller steps and offer lots of visual support. And there need to be a clear structure, they have to learn as much as possible through experiencing and there need to be special attention to generalization.
