What can I make in the future? Artistic research on flax and clay in past-, present-, and future environmentally sustainable design practices
Samenvatting
For designers, materials and production processes are crucial to the creation and quality of products like tablecloth and clay jars. Nowadays, utilitarian objects are mass- produced, far away. This contributes to environmental degradation, ecological imbalance and a loss of crafts and knowledge. To understand what we can still make in the future, we must explore the cultural history of flax and clay and their (past) manufacturing processes. By replication, we gain a deeper understanding of the production methods, craftsmanship, materials, and their origins. We explore the economic challenges in responsible use of natural resources for contemporary textile and ceramic design organizations. Through artistic reflection and scientific research on the past and present, we aim towards a vision for future design practices that use local materials leading to environmentally sustainable designs that enhance ecological balance.
